What is Obstetrics?

Obstetrics is the care of women before, during, and after giving birth. It includes the care needed for overall wellness and any precautions essential to ensure the health of the mother and fetus during pregnancy. It also covers care in the postpartum period. When giving birth, a mother will often be assisted and overseen by an obstetrician.

Women should contact an obstetrician as soon as their pregnancy is diagnosed and then for continued care throughout their pregnancy.

• During pregnancy:  An obstetrician is responsible for monitoring the health of a woman and her baby. Tests and ultrasounds are performed to monitor the stages of a baby’s growth and wellbeing, examining the physical and mental health of the mother as well as providing advice on nutrition, exercise and vaccinations.

• During childbirth: When the baby is ready to be born an obstetrician plays an important role in providing the best care during the birthing process and advising on the delivery. If any complications arise an obstetrician will be involved to take any necessary steps to ensure the health and well-being of the mother and baby.

• After childbirth:  An obstetrician will do a post-natal check-up after the birth and provide you with information regarding the care and support you may need in the early stages of your life with your newborn.

What is Gynaecology?

Gynaecology is the field of medicine that is concerned with the study and management of conditions of the female reproductive system.  Gynaecologists treat a wide range of issues.

Gynaecology includes detailed knowledge of the female reproductive system and of women’s needs at every stage of their lives from puberty all the way to menopause. Gynaecologists assess concerns and prescribe treatments to maintain the health of the vagina, uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes.

Gynaecologists perform routine checks such as Cervical Screening Tests(CST) and tests for sexually transmitted diseases as well as providing medical treatment for issues such as infections, diseases or any other irregularities and concerns. They may also advise and perform certain surgical procedures such as hysterectomies, ovarian cysts or the removal of precancerous cells found within a woman’s reproductive system. Contraception, fertility and fertility treatments are also part of gynaecology.
