Childbirth

Every birth is different and unique. There is something very special about a new life entering the world that is unrivalled by any other human experience. At POGS we are acutely aware of the privilege and responsibility of sharing these  very special moments with our patients. We work with women to make the birth of their baby special for them, their partners and their babies and create an environment in which they feel safe, cared for and heard. We are also aware that things do not always work out as planned and we are very aware of our critical role to ensure that we have a healthy mother and baby at the end of this journey.

It is impossible to predict exactly how childbirth will unfold and some women have instrumental deliveries and some caesarean sections.

A birth by caesarean section is also unique and special. Some women have caesarean sections by choice. Other women have a Caesarean section because a vaginal birth is not possible.

Birth plans

When thinking about a baby’s birth, things to consider are:

  • Mode of delivery i.e vaginal birth or caesarean section
  • Pain relief
  • Support person/people present
  • Special requests or preferences
  • Specific concerns or anxieties, most will be addressed  before birth during your surgery visits
  • What to take to hospital
  • When  to go to hospital,
  • Where to go in hospital, who to call

If you do decide to draw up a birth plan, please discuss it with us before the birth so that we are aware of your wishes.

One of the main benefits of a delivery with a private specialist is that you can get to know your doctor during your pregnancy. At POGS we also offer women the chance to meet the other specialists on the on-call roster in case your own doctor is not available on the day of birth.

Antenatal classes

We recommend that women and their partners attend antenatal classes because it provide an excellent education. It has been shown to prepare women for birth, reduce anxiety and make the experience more positive for women and their partners.
