POGS is a specialist group obstetric practice where women have the option to meet the doctors on our on-call roster during pregnancy. This means that if your usual obstetrician is unavailable on the day of birth, you are more likely to be cared for by a familiar, trusted specialist who understands your preferences and your birth plan. All specialists have access to your medical records if needed and an obstetrician is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Our priority is always a healthy mother and a healthy baby. We support vaginal birth whenever it is safe and appropriate, and respect a woman’s right to make an informed choices, including maternal-request caesarean section.

Looking after a new baby is hard for all parents, but it can be harder when you are recovering from a caesarean section! The time it takes to recover from a c-section does vary from woman to woman, but we wanted to give you some tips to help with your recovery in the first 6 weeks:
โ Do not lift any weight that is heavier than your baby and don’t lift anything that causes you pain.
โ Do your pelvic floor exercises. Even though you had a c-section, your lower abdominal muscles and pelvic floor muscles will still need strengthening.
โ Go for a mild walk every day, not just for physical health- you will notice this has emotional health benefits as well.
โ Eat a high-fibre diet to avoid constipation.
โ Drink plenty of water.
โ Use a wheat bag or hot water bottle on your wound.
โ Avoid sex until you feel comfortable.
โ Don’t be worried about numbness or itching around the scar, this is normal.
โ Avoid driving a car until your wound has healed.
โ Keep your wound clean and dry.
Call your doctor if you notice signs of infection (such as bleeding, fluid, or drainage; separation around the edges; or increased swelling, redness, or tenderness).

The non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT), tests for the risk of Down Syndrome & is done around 10 - 11 weeks of pregnancy. This test can also tell the sex of the baby & the risk of trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome) & trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome). It can occasionally suggest sex chromosome abnormalities. NIPT testing is about $400 & there is no Medicare rebate.
Pre-natal genetic carrier screening is a test that ideally should be done before you fall pregnant or as a part of the 'planning pregnancy' journey. As of 1/11/23, this test has become free for patients who have Medicare, therefore it is offered as a part of standard care at your first visit.

Welcome to the wonderful world of baby poop! ๐ฉ Your newborn's very first bowel movement will likely be black and sticky, called meconium. This is simply the waste that has accumulated in their digestive system before birth. No need to worry, it's perfectly normal!
By day two, their poop should soften up a bit, though still be dark in colour. Over the next few days, you'll see a transition to greenish-brown and finally, a sunny mustard yellow. As the poop changes colour, it will also become less sticky and more plentiful.
While newborn poop may not be the most glamorous topic, it's an important part of your baby's health.
